2012 Aston Martin Virage Volante Review

2012_aston_martin_virage_volante.jpg

The 2012 Aston Martin Virage Volante, which slots in between their the DB9 and top of the line DBS model, is filled with all manner of amenities and gadgets which even James Bond couldn’t have imagined, including a real pop-up navigation screen, but it lacks the anti-personnel features of the DB5 movie car. Today, all one has to do is depress the accelerator pedal, and unleash the 490 horsepower from its 6-Liter V-12 engine, which scoots from zero to 60 in only 4.6 seconds, and then keep charging up to the top speed of 183 miles per hour, to leave anyone chasing you in the dust.  It’s much simpler and even more fun.
LOOKS LIKE A MILLION BUCKS
2012 Aston Martin Virage Volante Wheel
Automotive journalists are not supposed to get hung up on the price of a car, nor the marque, when evaluating it for review. But it is almost impossible not to be taken it by the aura of a car like this.  And let’s face it, that’s part of what the well heeled buyers are looking for when they write a check for nearly a quarter of a million bucks. They want to feel like James Bond every time they enter the car, and want to promote that mystique to everyone else on the road who sees them driving it.

The Volante is a treat for the eyes with its bold sleek styling that oozes sex appeal. The familiar six sided grill with its five aluminum slats sits low across its nose, just above the trapezoidal lower air intake with flared corners that flow into the upswept creased side sills. The single bi-xenon headlamps, which feature a strip of trendy LED lights follow the lines of the car’s flanks to give a more crisp and modern look from the front. Just behind the front wheel arches surrounding the 10-spoke, 20” graphite wheels, are the iconic Aston Martin side strakes, with 6 LED lights that activate with the turn signals, and flow into the swan wing doors. The car’s rear haunches are accentuated with wide rear wheel wells and the body colored rear diffuser enhances the wide look of the rear deck. Dual chrome exhaust ports peek out from the blacked out rear fascia. This is a special car, and it looks the part.

ASTON’S FINEST INTERIOR
2012 Aston Martin Virage Volante Right Side Drive

aston_martin_virage_volante_2012.jpg

Slip into the Virage’s cockpit and you are immediately greeted by the smell of seven of the finest Bridge of Weir leather hides that make up the interior, and contrasting double stitching accents the entire cabin. Seventy man hours of bespoke craftsmanship goes into each interior, and it shows in the fine details. The heated seats are supportive and comfortably bolstered to caress the driver’s body. Black lacquer and brushed aluminum serve as contrasting appointments rather than traditional wood trim. All the controls are well laid out and easy to use, and feel right to the touch. The one exception is the round dial “joystick” control for the Garmin Nav System.Trust us; there is no joy in trying to operate that dial.

Cylindrical Bang & Olufsen speakers pop out of the corners of the dash when the radio is turned on and recede when turned off. The headliner for the cloth top feels luxurious and insulates the cabin from noise and cold quite effectively. A simple push button drops the top quickly where it’s hidden beneath a hard cover. While the Virage is technically a 2+2, equipped with rear seats, it would be almost impossible to have anyone other than small children to actually use them. A parcel shelf would be a better use of the space.

HARDLY A BOULEVARD CRUISER
2012 aston_martin_virage_volante.jpg

Insert the elegant crystal key fob into the dash to power up this Aston Martin and the V-12 sings a pleasant song. Mash the gas pedal and it turns into a nasty growl as the ponies and torque push you back into the seat all the way up to the 8000rpm redline. All that power and torque is sent to the rear wheels via a carbon fiber prop shaft and mated to a 6-speed Touchtronic II automatic transmission mounted on the transaxle contributing to perfect 50/50 weight balance.

2012 Aston Martin Virage Volante Dash
Aiding driver control, a ‘Sport’ button on the facia allows the driver to select a sharper throttle response and faster gear changes while also holding the gears without automatically shifting up at the rev limiter. With all the power and torque of the engine, there is always plenty of grunt available for quick passes, regardless of what mode you set it for. Of course if you choose to handle all the gear changes yourself, stationery paddle shifters are mounted behind the wheel, and since they don’t move with the steering wheel, it takes a little time to get used to. But all shifts are quick and immediate, and it is fun to flick through the gears yourself.
The Virage’s dynamics have been tuned to deliver an engaging yet more refined driving experience, where the driver can extract the maximum performance from the car with greater ease. A newly developed Adaptive Damping System (ADS) intelligently ‘reads’ the road to provide optimum road holding, adapting to different conditions. The system now selects up to five different stiffness settings within normal mode, and five stiffer settings within sport mode.

On the road, the Aston Martin Virage Volante handles extremely well. While the car generally feels solid, with the top down it still had more cowl shake and judder than we would have liked or expected in a car of this price. The Virage corners with confidence and despite the 4166 lb. heft of the car there is not much body lean. And knowing that all the electronics are working to keep you out of trouble, the driver can explore the handling capabilities to its fullest, without fear of trashing their large investment. A heavy throttle powering out of a turn will both delight and frighten you until the traction control takes hold and gets everything back into shape before the next turn arises.  This car loves to play on twisties, and it will eat up the miles eagerly.

2012-Aston-Martin-Virage-Volante.jpg

Of course, with all the power and cornering capabilities, brakes are an important part of the equation.  The Virage comes equipped with Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes as standard; other cars in this price range usually offer ceramic brakes as an option which usually cost more than a compact car. These brakes deliver progressive and tremendous stopping power. Powerful, and resistant to fade and much lighter than conventional cast-iron discs, the CCM braking system means that not only is the overall vehicle weight reduced, but the weight saving at each wheel means that a better balance between ride comfort and handling can be struck. Lower rotational mass also provides improved acceleration.

THE VERDICT
It would be impossible not to like this car. It is a unique and thrilling visceral driving experience because of the power and handling capabilities, but also because of its price and heritage. Each owner will bring his own unique set of mental images and attitude to the driving experience and it will be reflected back to him while driving the Aston Martin Virage Volante. And just as with any car in this price range . . . that is a big part of the ownership satisfaction.

The car was apparently a painted clay model and the interior was still in the design stage but was promised to be leaps and bounds improved.  In coming months I am sure we will begin to see spy shots due to the cars supposed 2012 year debut.

Feel free to disagree with us -or agree of course, by leaving a comment below. -High res image There’s no official word from Chrysler on whether this vehicle will remain a pure concept or if it’s destined for production, but bringing the car to market would not be a difficult task when you consider most of the car’s internals would be shared with the Challenger. As most readers would know, the original Barracuda was sold as a Plymouth but since that brand has been dropped from Chrysler’s lineup this latest version would have to be sold either as a Dodge or Chrysler. Not surprisingly the concept vehicle is badgeless.

2012-Plymouth-Barracuda-Rear-View.jpg

Take a look at this 2012 Plymouth Barracuda Concept made by digital art designer Danijel07. It took him about 27h to finish. Everything is brush except wheels, grill, lights and the mesh. Obviously it is based on the last generation Dodge Challenger, but there always was that blood relation in between those two muscle cars. This could definitely be an official 2012 Barracuda Concept.

When Chrysler trotted out the Barracuda concept this past November at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, our first thought, after wanting to give it our lunch money, was that it might be one of the few examples in recent memory where Chrysler’s badge engineering boffins couldn’t drop the ball. A Photoshop wizard from Sao Paulo, Brazil by the name of Rafael Reston figured that Chrysler wasn’t working fast enough (if at all) and decided to mock up his own interpretation of a Barracuda revival. While we’re not entirely sold on the styling cues he chose, which straddle the line between concept car gauche and an art student’s waste basket, we still like the idea. But it’s highly doubtful that Chrysler has the time or resources to pour into a low-volume seller that has the possibility of cannibalizing sales from the Challenger.

Back in April reports emerged claiming officials at Chrysler were considering creating a new Barracuda based on its upcoming Dodge Challenger, with none other than hot-rod legend Chip Foose dropping the suggestion at the New York Auto Show. These latest images, which turned up on CarDomain, are proof that Chrysler has created a new performance version of the Challenger.

Getting Auto Insurance For Brand New Cars

2-Door-Coupe
No matter where someone chooses to drive in Canada, the law requires that he or she obtain the appropriate motor vehicle insurance. This is a mandatory requirement in all territories and provinces if one wishes to operate his or her automobile legally. If a person is found not to have the proper policy for his car, he can end up losing his vehicle and receive several fines. Should they occur, any of these scenarios will have a negative impact on the driver's lifestyle, as well as his or her driving record.

2015 Ford Mustang Rendered

2015-mustang
Mustang is Ford’s oldest continuously produced nameplate (Ford might cite its F-series, but that didn’t bear the F-150 badge until a decade after the Mustang arrived). In its lifetime, Mustang has been many different cars: a reskinned Falcon, something closer to the Torino, a hideous and malformed mutant Pinto, and a Fox, the platform it shared with a variety of Fords, Mercurys, and even a couple of Lincolns across three decades. In its current form, though, Mustang has become something it flirted with from inception: great. We named the GT and Boss 302 to our 2012 10Best pantheon, and called the Boss “the best Mustang ever.” For 2015, Ford’s ungulate will undergo its most revolutionary redesign yet. We hear it’ll arrive Thursday, April 17, 2014, or 50 years to the day it originally went on sale. This should make for one helluva birthday.

Aston Martin One-77

2010-Aston-Martin-one-77

We have reported endlessly, it seems, on the stunningly fast, stunningly expensive, and stunningly styled Aston Martin One-77 in advance of the car’s official unveiling, which has just taken place at the 2009 Geneva auto show. Now that the supercar is out of the bag, we have more details on the most ambitious automobile in the company’s history.

Aston Martin DBS Carbon Black Special Edition

Aston-Martin-DBS-V12

Aston Martin doesn’t have to do much to dress up a space aside from bringing a car or three. Starting this month, Aston is doing just that to supply some particularly sexy furnishings for a series of luxury events across the nation, hosted by audio partner Bang & Olufsen. Specifically, it has supplied two examples of its most dapper DBS flagship yet, the new DBS Carbon Black special edition, to be put on display and used for demonstration. This is the first time the DBS Carbon Black will be seen in America: Its world reveal happened late last year in England, where, incidentally, it was joined by a matching Carbon Black edition of Aston’s smaller, faster V-12 Vantage, which, is a car we Yankees can’t get in any color yet.

Aston Martin Vanquish 2013

2013-Aston-Martin-Vanquish-Green

England can feel like the land that time forgot. The quaint villages dotting the countryside are short Sunday strolls apart, the roads connecting them no wider or smoother than necessary for horse-drawn carts. Ask a woman her weight, and she’ll give it to you in stone before slapping you. Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that Aston Martin can sometimes seem like the car company that time forgot. Replacing the DBS for 2013 as Aston’s sportiest, most expensive offering, the Vanquish wears styling that is directly, obviously traceable to the 1994 DB7. Behind the familiar face rests a 5.9-liter V-12 that debuted in 2000 and a central architecture dating to the 2004 DB9.

2014 Aston Martin DBS Carbon Black Edition

aston-martin-dbs-carbon-black-edition

We understand that the Vanquish has replaced Aston’s long-running DBS as the “high volume” flagship for 2013, but we recently had a chance at a last fling with a very special DBS. Special, that is, because it is draped in a shimmering black hue so fetching you might wonder why every Aston doesn’t come painted this way. The metallic flakes sparkle in the light as if saying “hello, guv” and “piss off” in the same blink. Onlookers twist to catch a glimpse of the sparkling body that’s shrink-wrapped around the 5.9-liter V-12 they just heard. Aston says it takes 50 man-hours to apply the paint.

Audi S7 Car and Driver

2013-Audi-S7
Looking at the Audi S7, we find it hard to believe hatchbacks ever went out of fashion. Few cars on the market have the presence of the A7 and its new high-performance derivative. While other manufacturers were busy building market-research-driven hatchbacks—vehicles like the BMW 5-series GT and Mercedes-Benz R-class—Audi simply tasked its designers with creating a beautiful five-door. The A7 doesn’t want for much, except perhaps more muscle than the 310 hp provided by its supercharged V-6.

Auto Mazda Kiyora

veh_upcoming_kiyora_1.jpg

Mazda Kiyora, revealed at the 2008 Paris International Motor Show, is the next generation of urban compact car. "Kiyora" (meaning 'clean and pure' in Japanese) represents the harmony between driving pleasure, environment and safety features and aspires to Mazda's long-term technology development vision, "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom."

veh_upcoming_kiyora_3.jpg

The concept of "Kiyora" helped designers imagine a city car cutting cleanly through an urban landscape, with water serving as the design theme of the vehicle. The Mazda Kiyora is equipped with Mazda's next generation 4-cylinder direct-injected engine, while achieving excellent fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. The Mazda Kiyora also features the unique Smart Idle Stop System. The improved aerodynamic performance used in the Nagare (Japanese for "flow") design concept also contributed to the design of the Mazda Kiyora. An all-new platform was designed to maximize weight reduction and provide a high level of safety while pursuing enhanced driving pleasure. The Mazda Kiyora also features interior design and functionality that support a youthful lifestyle.

CAR MAZDA KAZAMAI

Mazda Kazamai, which means "swirling crosswinds" in Japanese, was chosen to express the powerful yet nimble character of this stylish and compact crossover. Mazda Kazamai evolves the Mazda Nagare "flow" design creating a dynamic, athletic exterior. Unlike previous concept cars, Mazda Kazamai's styling represents powerful natural movements that are emotionally expressed through three-dimensional motifs stretching over the whole body, representing a fusion of design and functionality.

MAZDA KAZAMAI-6.jpg
CAR MAZDA KAZAMAI

Slightly larger than the current MAZDA3, the Mazda Kazamai features all the room and comfort of an SUV, with an innovative body design and flared fenders that emphasize SUV-like strength and a sports car inspired cabin. The wedge-shaped profile was designed to evoke the image of a sleek arrow cutting through a mighty wind, while the body design between the front wheel arches and the roof pillars is intended to express the agility and dynamism of wind gusting along the side of the vehicle. The panel lines on the sides represent swift and elegant crosswinds, further accentuating the dynamic and stylish body design. Large, 22-inch wheels were designed to continue the crosswinds motif with each spoke carefully twisted and larger outside than in the centre, providing a strong sense of movement.

MAZDA KAZAMAI-3.jpg
CAR MAZDA KAZAMAI

The ideal match for the Mazda Kazamai is the next-generation 2.0L direct-injection engine. Based on the Direct-Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) engine currently offered on the CX-7, Mazda's next-generation engine helps minimize energy loss and vastly improve thermal efficiency. It is coupled with a lightweight, next-generation, 6-speed automatic transmission that is highly responsive and delivers the direct feel of a manual transmission and 4-wheel drive (4WD) for superior traction.

News Ford Airstream concept

Airstream-concept

Verdict
The Airstream is more than a flight of fancy. The idea of having passengers sitting on either side, rather than facing the direction of travel, won’t have Ford’s safety experts jumping for joy. But the Dynascan screen is an interesting way of injecting fun into a car. The HySeries Drive power system is clean and functional. And it proves that MPVs don’t all have to look the same. If Ford could make it drive like an S-MAX, it might be on to a winner.

BMW 3 Series review

BMW-3Series-review

The latest BMW 3 Series has a lot to live up to, as its predecessor has ruled the competitive compact executive sector since making its debut in 2005. However, the old car wasn’t without its faults, and recent improvements to the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class weakened the BMW’s grip on the class crown. As a result, the latest 3 Series couldn’t have come soon enough. Bigger, more refined and with a range of efficient new engines, the all-new model once again propels the 3 Series saloon to the top.

Daihatsu Copen Convertible review

Daihatsu-Copen

Cute isn't it? Built to satisfy Japan's Kei class regulations concerning city cars the Copen is a bit of dinky-sized fun from Daihatsu. Look at it in profile and there's more than a hint of mini-TT about the Copen's styling, though with its folding hardtop convertible roof it's clearly been influenced by Mercedes' SLK roadster, too. Under that bonnet sits a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine, replacing the original, highly-stressed 660cc turbo. It’s quicker yet more relaxed - mate this to the snappy, positive gear change and you've got quite an entertaining package. In fact it's a hoot to drive. Whether you're slotting it through impossible gaps around town or buzzing down a country road there's never a dull moment. It's not all smiles though: motorways are a pain as it's noisy, the ride jiggles at speed and passing lorries look worryingly large.

Porsche new 991 series 911 GT3 Cup racer

Porsche new 991 series 911 GT3 Cup racer.jpg

Porsche has officially revealed the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup - what Porsche claims to be the most successful race car in the world.

2,395 units of the 911 GT3 have been produced for the past 14 years. After a heart inducing teaser trailer (posted on our Facebook Page), Porsche has revealed the new 911 (991 series) GT3 Cup racer - which also hints the future road going variant 911 GT3.

The 911 GT3 Cup will be exclusively run in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in 2013. Powered by a 3.8-litre six cylinder flat engine, it generates 460bhp mated to a six-speed gearbox developed by Porsche Motorsport, operated through shift paddles.

The current 911 GT3 cup also wears a newly designed single piece race wheels wrapped by slightly wider Michelin race slicks. Braking capabilities are also improved thanks to a newly developed race braking system incorporating 380mm steel brake rotors.

Driver safety is of paramount importance in any motorsport. Similarly Porsche has enhanced safety features in the GT3 Cup with a better designed safety cage on top of a new race seat. Topping off the safety features is a rescue hatch in the roof that allows medical crew easy access and extrication of the driver.

"The new 911 GT3 Cup is much easier to drive at the limit. The car is excellently balanced. The new axle geometry is enormously positive for the handling. Apart from that, the new Cup 911 is great fun to drive," concluded Porsche Works driver, Timo Bernhard, who had significant inputs on the new vehicle.
