May 2012, May, Fiat Group and Mazda revealed that they signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding, Alfa Romeo convertible sports car based on the fundamentals of the generation MX-5 Miata.
Under the plan, the new Alfa Romeo convertible, a tip to revive the name Spider (although Duetto also been hinted), will be built by the side of the new Mazda MX-5 at a factory in Hiroshima, Japan.
To help distinguish Alfa from his Mazda, this car will feature Italian style and engine.
Currently, the two companies announced the signing of a Final Agreement, which states that the Japanese automaker will produce an open-top two-seater sports car in its Hiroshima plant from 2015.
For Mazda, the deal helped revitalize some enthusiasm in the affordable convertible sports car market, which has traditionally been dominated by the company's MX-5. It also means filling capacity in one of the car manufacturer.
As per the MoU, the new Alfa Romeo Spider (as they may be named) will be based on the architecture of the fourth-generation MX-5 - which, for Alfisti and sports car enthusiasts, is certainly good news as it means that the Italian roadster will be rear-wheel drive.
MX-5-based new Alfa estimated to weigh less than 2,300 pounds and features a 1.75-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine matched to either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic. This is the same drivetrain that will feature in more exotic Alfa Romeo 4C, which will serve as a halo model for the brand.
